This is my first time changing the fuel filter on my Rose Air (Spartan Chassis). The Cummins book states that I put the filter on dry, and then put the ignition in the run position for 30 seconds, during which the filter will be primed. It also states if the engine fails to start, to loosen the banjo fitting to let the air out. Now looking at the filter (which the coach manufacturer relocated from the side of the engine block) there is an allen wrench fitting that appears could be used to bleed off air at the filter source. The cummins book doesn't mention this (I assume Rexhall added this) and the coach documents don't get into filter changes. My question is, should I loosen this allen fitting before trying to prime the filter to minimize the chance of air getting in the lines, or does this fitting serve some other purpose.

The filter:

Ditto on the prefilling the filter. But remember to pour clean fuel into the ring of holes around the outside of the new filter as this is where the fuel enters the filter and exits through the center hole.. This will preclude getting unfiltered fuel into the injectors. KDK

Many, MANY will tell you to NOT prefill the fuel filters for many reasons. But if you decide to do so...and I do....take a filter to the hardware store and get a long pipe nipple ( about 4") that will screw down into the top of the filter ( not all the way now...just enough to go in solidly) that way you CANT get additional dirt into the filter because ALL of the fuel goes into it AROUND the center hole!

My Cummins manual (2003 400 turbo) states DO NOT prefill the fuel filter but turn the key to the on position and wait till the wait to start light goes out, I did that twice (just to be sure the filter was full) after changing the fuel filter and it started with no problems.

I have changed my fuel filter many times. I have never loosened the allen fitting or poured fuel in the filter.

The following directions are from the Cummins service tech:

1. Put new filter on dry.
2. Turn key to "on" for 20-30 seconds then turn "off". Do this TWO times.
3. Turn key to "on" position and "bump" starter (do not start engine) and turn key "off". Do this TWO times.
4. Start engine as normal

I have followed these directions each time and never had a problem. My Rexair has the Cummins ISC 360HP.

Why even THINK about not following the manufacturers instructions?

Follow what PandK above said!!

The reason Cummins doesn't want a user to pre-fill the fuel filter is that for every 100 people that do this there will be 10-50 people that get dirt into the injection system. This is one time to do what the manufacturer says.
