I have 2006 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab 1500, short bed and want to tow 1995 Wilderness Fifth Wheel, approx wt. 9,000. Have been towing with 1995 Chevy Silverado Ext Cab Short Bed with no slider hitch, slow uphill, but it gets there. Does anyone have any info or experience with this set-up. Do I need a slider hitch?

Both short boxes then not much difference as far as hitches. Was your old truck a 1500 also? Seems like you'll have to much pin weight for a 1500. At 20% of 9k you'll be at 1800lbs. My old TV was a 01 1500 but my RV was much lighter than 9000, I think my pin # was about 1100-1200lbs. Good Luck

You don't need a slider you need a bigger truck.
Wait til the weight police hear about this.

is the 9,000 dry weight. That is what I have and use a Chevy hd 2500 with durmax. If I was going full time I would want larger. it does fine but would not attempt to pull with a 1/2 ton. I recently used a 1/2 ton suburban to pull a boat and a world of difference. I am sure you could do some things to beef up the suspension on the truck and if you were going short distances on flat area you could get by.
Good luck

The Crew Cab is heavier and has lower tow rating. You went slow before, now you will go slower with lousy fuel milage. What you are trying to do is not recommended. Very much over weight. Should have gotten a 3/4 ton with lower gears.

If the hitch to the back of cab distance is the same on the new truck as it was on the old truck, then you might get by with out the slider. But with the longer truck you may need to turn sharper.

Chevrolet made a real short bed CC 1500 one year, something along 5.5'. Is the bed less than 6' long?

I would recommend a slider hitch to anyone pulling with a short box, but... a slider hitch will weigh even more than a fixed conventional hitch and you sure are short of available carrying capacity already. 9,000lb fifth wheel is really going to tax your truck, lot of weight on that rear axle. Hope for who ever is riding in the cab you installed LT truck tires, not carrying the weight on P-series tires.

I must have had a senior moment!! After all of your replies I realized I had put the GVW and not the Dry Weight of the fifth wheel which is 6,120. Thanks for all your concerns with the info previously posted, it certainly caught my attention.

My wife has a '06 1500 crew cab chevy 5.3 auto tranny 3.73 gears 4x4 and has a 7500 lb tow rating.
We pulled 5ers for many years before the hitch makers gave us a sliding hitch. Sure makes it easier. Our crew cab chevy has a 5' 8" bed which makes a sliding hitch a better way to go. I don't use the little 1500 truck to pull my 5er in sig but it pulls a 8500-9000 lb tractor/FEL/implement trailer at times. Yeah it struggles up the bigger hills like any 5.3 size engine pulling 8000-9000 lbs.
