I have a 1995 Four Winds class C that has a 30amp Magnetek converter/charger in ity and it has been trouble free to this point but lately when the generator is running and it is plugged up to it and all the 12 volt lights are on in the unit it will just randomly make the lights dim and it sounds like it cuts off the charger i guess and then it cuts back on a few mins later brightening the lights and then cuts off again. I was thinking oh well it is just hot and cutting itself off and that I should clean the fan and coils but then again I looked and it wasnt that dirty and it has been hott before so this should be no different.

I guess what I am asking is does this sound normal and or maybe I should replace the unit? It runs power to the other appliances fine just shuts off the charger portion im guessing is what makes the lights go dim from time to time.

Any thoughs are appreciated

If it the same one I have (Magnetek PC30 30amp). I had removed mine earlier this year and replaced it with a IOTA DLS45 with the IQ4 Smart Charger because I wanted the multistage charge feature which it offered, Best upgrade we made. I keep the Magnetek PC30 boxed up as a spare just in case.

I think that it's the battery charger cutting in and out. If the batteries are being charged the DC volts are higher than when the batteries are fully charged and the charged has switched off.

All RV converters that charge do it 100% of the time, none of them cut off unless something is wrong. Check your batteries.

The strange thing about this is that when plugged up to shore power the cutting of and dimming of the lights does not happen but when running on the generator is when it happens. Has anyone had that experience with their converter/charger? Also if I change it out how hard is it to do as in is it something I can attempt and also is it something I can buy any converter charger to fit in the same place the magnetek did? I assume I leave the fuse pannel top part in there and just replace the bottom part of the guts of it?

I can think of very few things that would cause that.

I do however agree with the REPLACE IT recommendations.. A good 3-stage like the Xantrex linked to above or a Progressive Dynamics 9200 will quickly pay for itself by making your batteries last longer. In some cases MUCH longer.

Sounds like your converter is ok and its the gen or its wiring that is the problem area.
