I know I am way in my planning but I like to get all the info I can early. We are going to be in the Seattle area next summer and will be heading home in Oct or early in Nov. 2010. I would like to pull our 36ft 5th to Bend and do some side trips from there. Being an old flatlander from the Gulf coast I'm always looking for the easiest way to get to my destination. thanks for any input. Sorry just realized in the wrong forum with this post---------John

From Seattle south on I-5 to I-205 in North Vancouver. South on I-205 to I-84, east to US 26. US-26 over the Cascades to US 97 and south into Bend.
Stop over at Timberline Lodge at the summit is well worth stop.

I'd be more inclined to head south on I-5 and take Hwy 22 to Hwy 20/126 to Bend. As Bud says the stop at Timberline can be great, just need to decide if that's in your plans or not. Hwy 97 is a pretty heavy trucking Hwy, having driven it many times I try to avoid it when I can.

Second the Salem and OR 22 but that is me. You can always stop at Detroit Lake State Park, and Sisters, OR. My second choice would be US 26 over Mt. Hood.

There could be problems on any of the passes in your time frame. Sanitam is a little lower then US 26.

I drive Santiam pass all the time. Last Saturday it was fast and dry but the news forcast is one to two feet of snow in the next couple of days. Any time after mid October a person never knows. You have several ways to go. Take 26 over Mt Hood, drive east on I-84 and south on 97 or the Santiam pass. Oregon has trip check on both the internet and phone for the current road conditions.

Living on Oregon I avoid hwy22 if at all possible. The highway climbs all the way from Salem to the summit, about 80+ miles. My fuel economy is generally at least 1MPG less on hwy 22. Take hwy26 and the climb is only about 20 miles to the summit. Then it is down hill about the same distance. Then there is only one short decent and climb into and out of the Deschutes River canyon. The truck traffic is not as bad as some want to lead you to believe and passing is generally not a big deal.
