"If the legacy 383-horsepower, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 won't cut it for your hauling needs in the next-generation Dodge Ram heavy-duty pickups, hang on just a bit longer. An all-new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 is on its way by 2011 with power ratings of between 450-hp to 500-hp, according to our sources.
The 6.4-liter V-8 is said to be based on Chrysler's current SRT8 high-performance 6.1-liter Hemi V-8, but with a larger bore and longer stroke optimized for use in three-quarter-ton and one-ton truck applications instead of street racing. The engine is already being tested on the road in HD Ram engineering mules. There's no word on what transmission it will use, but ZF's new six-speed gearbox designed for gas or diesel engines might work.
An SRT-tweaked version of the 6.4-liter is also expected to debut in the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8."
Then there was an "update" posted later that read:
"Update #1 November-4-2009 02:19 EDT:
Fred Diaz, president and CEO of the Ram brand, says Ram Heavy Duty pickups will receive Chrysler's new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 gasoline engine.
"We anticipate the 6.4-liter engine will go into the Heavy Duty Ram," Diaz said. "It's an appropriate engine for our trucks."
Diaz wasn't specific about which model year HD Ram will become available in.
Will the 6.4-liter large displacement Hemi find its way into other Chrysler vehicles, like Dodge or Jeep?
"I don't know if it's going to go into more than Heavy Duty," Diaz said.
----
Paolo Ferrero, Chrysler's senior vice president of Chrysler powertrain, showed off a slide at today's 2010-14 Chrysler business plan presentation that shows the rumored 6.4-liter V-8 Hemi is official. It's output will be approximately 450-horsepower.

Looks like Dodge is throwing another hat in the HD gasoline powered pickup truck ring. Good to see they remain competitive, and have a plan for the future for good product (at least when it comes to trucks) -- especially among all the doom and gloom that gets posted.

Ain't free market(well sort of free, as long as you don't count taxpayer funded bailouts)capitalism great. Ford's new 6.2 almost to market now Chrysler bringing out a better HEMI, wonder what GMC has planned.
Now we all have to hope that the market doesn't rebound too soon or the price of gas will start going through the roof once more killing all these great plans.

I'm not knocking Chrysler for doing this. They need to stay market-competitive with Ford/GM, with a high output gasoline V8 for their 3/4-1 ton trucks, but this is so reminiscent of the old horsepower race that our big 3 gets into.
As with the diesels from the big 3, I could care less if one had 10 H.P. more or 10 ft/lbs. more power than the other. When you get up into the area of nearly 400 H.P. out of a V8 and our getting around 400 ft/lbs of torque where do we hit a limit?
Unless these higher output V8's/V10's get much, improved mileage or unchanged fuel mileage from the engine they replace, are we going in the right direction?
*******
Personally, I find it very intriguing that the future Ram 1/2 ton maybe getting a Fiat diesel.
Fiat is a major, major diesel engine builder in Europe. I am saddened that the 5.0 liter V8 Cummins got the "snub" when Chrysler went bankrupt, but maybe the Fiat alternative will be more economical, and make more sense.
*******
Anyway, if this new Hemi will be putting out these h.p. numbers, what will be the life span of this engine. Does it have extra thick cylinder block thickness around those bores?

After towing with my diesel I doubt I would ever go back to gas. I had a Dodge V10 that got about 7mpg towing and didn't have the towing power of my diesel has. The new ram gets 11 mpg towing up the hills twice as fast as the V10. I guess it is good to have the choice because some people really do like their large gas engines. I was one of them until I tried the new truck.

I easily went back to gas after four Cummins Rams. Never had a V10 dang it but I can't imagine towing 140mph uphill and getting 11mph to boot! My diesels all towed the same 65-70mph my gasser tows. The new 6.4L Hemi sounds like a beast. I keep wanting my next truck to support American labor so the choice between the new HD Hemi Ram and Ford HD 6.2L is going to be a tough one.

I think you miss-understoud my post: unless you meant KM/h. The V10 with 4.10 gears would tow 12 000 lbs up a 10% grade of 5-10 km at about 40 km/h while the new truck with 3.73 gears tow at about 90 km/h.

Mine will do it...... Hauled 24K up 7+% grade in the Bighorn Mts in strecthes up to six miles at a time and never dropped below 50MPH. That was more for the turns than the grade. This was when it was stock.
It truely is a beast.

Well that will be a nice addition, I hope they spec out the gearing and tranny in a favorable manner for those of us who prefer a gas powered engine for a mid-profile 5th wheel. I see no personal need to spend 50K on a new diesel truck for my application.
I know other's have chimed in on this but 50-60K for a SRW diesel 3/4 ton is a tough pill to swallow.
