2-3 weeks ago, I posted about having someone come to my house and give estimates for flooring, going all tile or wood. Holy Smokes !!! That idea died pretty quick when I got the estimates. Now shifting gears here.

Anyone have their flooring ripped out and the concrete stained ? How do you like that (if you have it) and any pics would be great, I've never seen what this might look like ?

If you think nobody cares, try missing a couple of payments.

Never ever seen this in a residence. We see it in commercial establishments such as salons and such. Done right it is just as expensive as tile. Done wrong it will still cost you the same amount to do the tile then as it did in the first place

I was going to say that would be very cold on the feet, but in Texas I guess it doesn't matter. One concern to me is wet, stained concrete can be very slippery. We installed a laminate floor ourselves, it wasn't difficult and it didn't break the bank. Looks great, too.

I have a friend who painted his concrete floor with some type of paint designed for floors. He thought it was the greatest thing in the world. I thought it was ugly as heck and there's no way I would ever do it to my house.

Painting and concrete staining are complete polar opposite finishes

In most of our house, we have Congoleum vinyl flooring that comes in 12' widths but looks like 1' tiles. Most people can't tell the difference and we were able to walk on it and move furniture back immediately. If you go to the Congoleum website, they even have a neat feature where you can see how the flooring you like would look in a living room, bedroom, dining room, etc. This stuff is great, doesn't scratch or stain. Vinyl laminates have come a long, long way.

Friends built their house with the intent of leaving the concrete floor exposed and stained so the house was designed with that in mind. Looks good the way they did it. Only drawback I saw was if the concrete cracked it would be hard to match the stain as their's has a motled look as opposed to a solid color, when you repaired the crack (some California area have setteling/cracking problems).

As for slippery, I painted our outside concrete landing and just added some made for the specific purpose non slip sand additive. Did not leave bumps or any indication the sand was in the paint.

We spent a weekend in this Frank Lloyd Wright home - it had stained concrete floors, which were warm to the eye (and touch- radiant heat)

There's tons of pictures on this website - you'll have to scroll down to get to the interior pictures showing the floor

Stained floors done right are great. See if your slab has any cracks when you get your flooring up. You may be surprised at the number of them, if you have a typical Texas slab with any amount of age to it.
