We are looking at upgrading from a Class A gas to a diesel pusher. Have not driven one. One question we have is in regards to filling it with fuel. Where are the best places to fill-up? Truck Stops or regular gas stations. What can I expect to find at Truck Stops? Are there any protocols or proceedures to follow when filling up?

Any other concerns I need to be aware of while driving... other than enjoying the ride?

Thanks, in advance, for any help.

Use the truck side bigger nozzles and easy to get out of there. If you have a fuel fill on each side of your motor home be sure and open the other side fuel cap you will foam alot less!!! just another 2cents worth rvtommy

You did not state what length but that has a lot to determine where you fill up. Truck lanes /stops would be a lot easy on you. I have 37 foot gas and we using Fly J and any top tier gas station that we can get into. As we travel we mark our Next Exit if we can get into there station. Good luck.

Easy in and easy out are my first item, then a high volume station as diesel should not be old. I like flying J truck stops but finding diesel is not that big of a deal. Class A have large tanks so I can go up to 800 miles on a fill but most of the time fill at half a tank. I never use truck lanes, don't know why but just dont.

I generally get fuel at the truck pumps. If you will be towing, I would suggest you do the same. Some of the designated RV lanes are tight. I go inside, give them my cc, reward card, etc. Put on disposible gloves (hate the smell of diesel), and begin to pump. I find if I put the nozzle in too far, the pump auto shut off might engage. Once the fuel is going in, I clean the windshield. When done fueling, pull up to allow the next customer to begin fueling, then go in and pay.

It is pretty much the same as a gasser. You want easy in and out with some room to maneuver.
Gas is available at every gas station you go by and diesel is not so you tend to be more aware of the GREEN diesel fuel price sticker at the local stations.
All major truck stops carry diesel, Flyinj J's etc. and they have rv specific fueling pumps.
Diesels have a larger fuel capacity than gas powered coaches so you can go farther and on any trip will fuel less often. Mine has 90 gallons and have gone over 600 miles between fuel ups with a comfort reserve.
But be aware you just may not find diesel at some little one gas station town.

Diesel is not hard to find, and with a large tank (mine holds 180 gallons), you don't have to find diesel all that often, or be at the mercy of localized high prices.

You want to buy from a high volume station so the diesel has not been in their tank too long.

The other matters are buying where you can physically fit and looking for good prices.

Truck stops are easy to fit into, but can be messy with diesel spills. Often credit card prices are a bit high.

Card lock stations are easy to fit into and clean, but prices can be high depending on the trend in spot pricing. I have a Pacific Pride card from Pioneer Fuels, but have yet to use it.

I use GasBuddy on the web to search for good diesel prices, and often buy at a couple of local top-tier stations that I know I can fit into. Some even have truck-only diesel pumps that MIGHT be easy to get into and sometimes have the large nozzles.

I have removed the other side fill cap before. But last week I seen a owner of a DP pump a LARGE amount (?) of fuel out the other side. So maybe not the best for some models. ????

The best part is when I was pumping at a Royal Farms...on 13 on the Delmarva....I learned how to take a shower in diesel fuel.....

To everyone who responded: Thanks!

We are in the process of negotiating the purchase of a 38 ft. Georgie Boy, and will be towing with a tow dolly. So length is a consideration when it's time to "fuel up." Presently, we have a 32 ft. gasser.
