I usually use the Flying J RV lanes. You can use your credit card at the pump and with the PenFed Visa giving 5% back on fuel paid for at the pump its worth the extra few minutes it takes to pump diesel through a smaller nozzle. That 5% adds up to a free tank of gas for our car every month.

Having said that I have also used the big boy pumps at truck stops before I got the PenFed Visa and I must say the big nozzles move a lot of fuel very quickly.

Only one person mentioned anything about your question on protocol. When using the truck islands, always and I mean always, pull ahead from the pumps after you are done, so the next person can use the pumps as you go inside to pay. Never leave your rig setting at the pump or in front of the pump, while you shop or eat, as some RVers do. If you want to shop or eat, pull into a parking spot and then go in and settle up your bill, plus do whatever else you want. Truckers don't appreciate anyone who blocks a fuel lane while they peruse the store, be it an RVer or another trucker.

What about other TRUCKERS that block the pumps? I pulled into a FJ once..that had 5 islands. Four had trucks in them...no driver around anywhere and behind each of them were other rigs..sitting...with no drivers in them EITHER???

It happens but it shouldn't.

And you still had the 5th island.

Be very careful about the color of the diesel fuel handle. In some locations the diesel fuel filler will be green, and in other places the diesel color is yellow.

Last summer we were fueling up beside a brand new DP where the owner had filled it with gas by mistake. He had to wait for a truck to come and pump his tank empty and pay a disposal fee on 150 gallons of fuel.

I know of a guy that did that...this year in fact!....*snicker*

Did I post about that on this forum?

I put 40 gallons of gasoline in a 90 gallon tank. Drove about 6 miles home (less than a gallon) and realized my mistake from the low cost on the receipt.

Long story short. I called for a tow using my tow service and had 90 gallons pumped out at the service facility I use for maintenance.

Wasted time = 4 hours
Monetary cost - $400
Permanent Learning Experience = Priceless.

BTW, the guys at the shop told me not to beat myself up too much. They do about one coach a week....

BTW, had the fuel filters changed and they had no gasoline odor. If I had done this on the highway and driven further I would have escalated the cost by about $15,000.

We mostly use truck stops since it's so much faster to fuel, and so much easier to get into. I agree, fuel, pull ahead and then settle. You can also joint Pacific Pride through Pioneer Fuel and get access to these truck fuel stations, which I think are mostly in the west. They're usuall open 24, unmanned and their directory lists the difficulty of getting in and out. The only problem is they don't list current price, but I beleve Pioneer will e-mail the current price weekly. It's nice to have, but we usually just use the truck stops.

Pet peeve, RV'ers who use the RV specific Islands, and then "park" the rig there--paying, showering, eating or shopping? Move your rig when you have finished pumping, just like in the truck lanes.

We're 40ft plus a toad. I fill up at the best price. Most truck stops have diesel fuel spilles on the ground. On the bottom of your feet and then into your MH. I avoid them and have had no problems.

While travelling, I look for truck stops and I use the truck lanes. Even if I have to go in to pay and back in to sign, I still like all the room. It just makes the process less stressful.

I was very happy to find a Sheetz station around the corner from my storage lot that sells diesel. Sheetz convenience stores have very large filling areas, so now I always fill up before parking it.

Use the truck side bigger nozzles and easy to get out of there. If you have a fuel fill on each side of your motor home be sure and open the other side fuel cap you will foam alot less!!! just another 2cents worth rvtommy

I had never heard that before! But will try it next time!

We always use the truck stops and the truck pumps. It only takes one time towing a car behind you to find out you can't get out without unhitching to convince a person to never go into a car pump again.

I always use the truck pumps at FJ since I have trouble with the RV pump island. Do not stand too close when it is close to being done filing. I have had diesel splash on the shoes a few times.

The gas fuel pump handle has a air hole in the nozzle about 2inches up from the end. When fuel hits that hole the pump shuts off. That is what I was told. The station attendant could have been pulling my leg but I took his word on it anyway.
