duplicate post responses here

The water pours out the side of my motorhome while I'm driving (turning corners). It never did this in the past, so it is a fairly new problem. I took it to Camping World and they said there wasn't a leak. It doesn't have a *leak*, it comes out the side only. I can fill it up one weekend and drive around town for a week and only have 1/4 tank left at the end of the week! Although the air hole has never been plugged in the past when it worked properly, would that solve the problem? I travel by myself for dog shows and need the water. Sure could use your HELP! Thanks.

Sounds like the cap is off your gravity tank fill opening.

I assume when you say water pours "out the side" you are speaking of some storage compartment area and not literally "out the side".

Could be what happened to mine when I first bought it. There are 2 fill tubes, one large and the other small. The previous owner evidently never blew out the large fill tube so it froze and sprung a leak. It never leaked under normal use, unless you stopped hard, so it was not obvious why it leaked.

My guess is that it's siphoning out through the vent pipe. Once it starts coming it is continues due to siphoning action. Plug that vent hole and the problem likely goes away.

From your description it sounds like a vent leak or siphon problem.

Your fresh water tank will typically have three connections/lines coming out of it via "ports" A bottom port will lead out to a water line, likely a clear tube about 3/4' in diameter, leading to your water pump, then to sinks, shower, etc. This is how your RV gets water out of the tank.

Your tank should have two more "ports" at the top. One will have a larger line going in. This is likely to be about 1" to 2" in diameter. This is the fresh water fill inlet port. There should also be another line/tube about 1/2" to 1" which is a air vent. This allows air out of tank when filling, and allows air in when using water. If this line is sticking down inside the tank, RV motion can cause it to siphon water out. These air vent lines lead out to an area where water can leak out...this is how many RVers know the tank if full...fill until it leaks out the vent line.

Make sure vent line is not sticking down into tank. If this is not the problem, check for a vacuum breaker in the fill or vent lines...it serves to prevent siphoning...it may be jammed shut/or fouled with corrosion. Photos of such devices can be found online (west marine).

Thanks. The water does appear to be coming out of either the fresh water fill or air vent hole next to it on the side of the motorhome. I didn't realize there was a line from the air vent portion that could get into the tank. I'll take a look this weekend and see if I can figure out what your talking about. I drive my 24' every day so I know it never did it before so maybe this is the problem. I'll keep you posted.

Is that a classic oxymoron or what.

Our 2002 DSDP used to siphon more than half a tank out while traveling.

DH put a valve on the vent. We open it while filling, close for the road and open it when using water. Problem solved.
