You are not taking it into Canada, that's where the restrictions are regarding firearms. Do what you would do in the Lower 48; myself I would put it in my checked baggage and keep my mouth closed. No ammunition!!! You will not have to make any declarations as you would going thru Customs.

Many, many hunters come to Alaska with their firearms and ammunition. Depending on where you are going, ammo could be hard to find. Lots of sporting good stores/gun shops, just not a lot of some types of ammo. TSA rules allow firearms and ammo in checked bags, just not loaded firearms. To ship through a dealer you will pay shipping plus dealer fees at both ends.

I had one of those once. I bought it right before the Super Redhawks came out. Sweet shooter with 44 specials. But my shooting hand would swell up after I ran a box of magnums thru it.

Good Luck,
Brad

I would suggest the "layover" in Canada will be a huge problem. A layover may mean that your checked baggage my deplane. If that is the case you will have to go through Canadian security with a firearm in you baggage. That will get you in a heap of poop, right away. There is a process for importing a firearm to Canada that you must follow. If that firearm is not properly imported, the penalties are severe.
If I recall correctly, the ship it to a licensed gun shop in Alaska is the best resolution to the problem. If the firearm is a handgun and discovered by Canadian officials you will be in an even bigger heap of poop. The restrictions on sidearms in Canada are far more stringent than those in the US. Getting a CC license in Canada is like catching a fly with chopsticks, it can be done but it doesn't happen very often.

If you have to go through Canada Customs here is the info...

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5044-eng.html#P008

Each time we crossed over the border into Canada this year I noted that in addition to the silly question regarding purchased booze in your possession they always asked if we had firearms in the truck or camper.

There is a lot of talk on the news up here regarding illegal handguns from the states showing up on the streets of our larger cities.

If the layover is just to change flights, Then the baggage won't clear canadian customs. If you are laying over long enough to collect baggage and leave terminal, then that is a different story. Also, if the gun is not registered it must be before hand. Go to any F.F.L. gun shop and have the paperwork filled out. Grand dads old rifle that was passed down from generations could be confiscated as an unregistered firearm, as all transactions must be filed with A.T.F.

With the magnums I tremble after the first few rounds. My hope
is that the grizzly tremble will offset the cannon tremble and
my shots will be true.

If you you have a friend who lives there mail it to them. I had a friend mail me a shotgun, it was simple, just no ammo. If that does not work I would fly with it as stated above. Its probably just as easy since you say the stop in Canada is just to change planes. should not be a big deal.

I do not think I would send it to a gunshop. Probably alright to do just would not feel right sending one of my guns to someone I do not know.

This is great! There are as many different answers as there are posts on this thread. Everyone is an expert!

With that in mind, in my expert opinion...

Check with the real experts:
- Ask the airline ahead of time what their rules are.
- Go to the airport a couple weeks before your flight and ask the TSA supervisor.
- Ask your local gun shop.
- Contact a gun shop in Alaska and ask them.

Read the law on both the Alaska end & your (I presume) Kalifornia end. Remember, you will want to get your firearm BACK from Alaska and the CA restrictions may make that more difficult then getting the gun north.

There is a lot of good information on Internet forums. There is a lot of mis-information too. For something which could potentially put you in legal hot water, please take what you read here in perspective.
