I am new to the RV scene and am looking for a new RV to fit my upcoming lifestyle. I am six months to a year from retiring and am looking for a travel trailer to spend time seeing our great country. I am single and plan on traveling alone for the most part. I originally considered full timing but have backed away from jumping into that before I try an extended trip first. I recently bought a new GMC Sierra 1/2 ton pick up which limits the size of trailer I can pull. I'm interested in ultra lite travel trailers in the 24 to 28 ft range and would like some advice from all the experts out there in which manufactures provide a comfortable and yet rugged trailer that I could tow for 2 or 3 months at a time. I live in NY but am planning on flyfishing the streams and rivers out west. I'd like to keep the GVWR in the 6000 to 7000 lb area as the max towing capacity of my tow vehicle is 7500 lbs. Hope you all can help. Thanks

First piece of advise I can offer......take your time and don't do any impluse buying. Along with the replies that follow, also check out a few RV shows so that you can look at the different brands and floor plans.
Another thought...., check and see what your TV's GCWR is. Next, load you truck up with fuel and simulate the added weight of stuff that you would have in the truck if you were going camping. Then head to a CAT scale and weigh the TV. Subtract your TV weight from your GCWR and the remaing weight will be a good "estimate" of what you can actually tow (you may find it less than the maximum 7,500lb).
Just food for thought.

Thanks Linky and Turk. I have done a little research on models and floor plans but am just starting to actually go and look. Good advice about loading up the tow vehicle and then getting it weighed. I am concerned about up and down the hills out west and don't want to over tax the truck.

Yep, to much weight can make it tough towing through the hills and mountians.

Airstream has 10 trailers with GVWR of 6000# or less.
I have a 28' International, but it is too heavy for your TV. I travel alone, with my dog, and really like my Airstream. It tows great and fits my needs to a "T".
It's a more expensive than most other TT's, but in my case, you get what you pay for. I've had no problems with it and have towed it all over the place from sea to shining sea.

Reason i mentioned the model i did was because i have one ( see in sig ) and tow it with a 4.3 chev 1/4 ton . Hills do bother me but i can constantly keep up a speed of 100km until of course i hit one . I do like the floor plan with the bedroom in the back . I know it isn`t a $50,000 RV but i own it and love it for a family of four . It being an ultralite makes buying another truck an option i don,t need .

I've looked at the Airstreams and they are a super nice RV. A bit pricy but I know others who own them and agree with you about the quality. Probably a bit more than I want to spend right now.
I just looked for the Prowler Fleetwood and it seems that they are no longer in producution. Is this the case. If not can you point me to a web site.

They are only selling motorhomes i believe but parts are readily available for my rig . Made sure of that before i bought it and of course there is always generic suppliers . I`ve seen posts here about the quality of an ultralite compared to a heavier RV but for the money i paid i could`nt go wrong .
With the aluminum construction compared to steel and wood it tows like a dream without taking out a loan for some fun weekends while getting some looks from owners of ton trucks towing almost the same size RV but weighing in at almost twice the weight !
