I'd only support stopping Saturday mail delivery IF they also reduce the employees wages and benefits by 14% across the board. They'd be working 14% less hours a week so why shouldn't their compensations reflect it? Non governmental employees are treated to the compensation cuts for reduced working hours so why aren't governmental/postal employees? Keeping their compensations at the same level is the same as giving them a 14% increase for doing NOTHING! Each working day eliminated is another 14%. Are Wednesday's next???? Maybe cut it down to 1 day a week delivery and also cut their compensations by 86% and make the Postal Service really profitable so they can cut postage rates accordingly. Maybe part time employees that work 1 day a week??

While we are at it. Let's cut delivery out all together and make people go get their mail when they want to. Think of the traffic jams and extra fuel comsumption etc. Think of how huge the trash bins would have to be at the Post Office to hold all the junk mail people would toss immediately. Junk mailers would soon get the hint and stop spending their money on immediately tossed trash. No bills would suddenly appear at your home! Somehow, that has a nice ring to it!!!

Cut the fat, cost overuns, and inefficiency out of the present governmental run system and delivery methods and don't ruin it! Anything government run is awash with waste and inefficiency and how many past and present examples do we need to teach us the obvious. Are we so stupid as to add more government run loser programs????

Well, the head of FedEx stated he could deliver letter mail throughout the US for .10 cents per piece, have it all delivered overnight and still make a profit. So why can't the government?

Try at least $10 and not .10 cents. The USPS will pickup a letter from my mailbox and deliver it anywere in the USPS system that includes Alaska, Guam etc for 44 cents.

What makes you think the USPS pays for non-work days ? The USPS only pays for hours worked.

I would much rather a day mid week be left out like Wed or Thursday. A lot of my packages must be signed for and Saturday mornings are the only time the postman would catch us at the house. I know we can go pick them up at the post office, but there are certain weeks when it is really difficult for me to be able to take off work and get to the PO during their work hours.

8.1 Van,

Then it sounds like you agree with me! Postal workers would automatically see their pay and compensation benefits cut across the board by 14% if Saturday delivery were stopped. No exemptions! Now the USPS is very profitable again and will need less revenue/subsidies so postage rates will go down, RIGHT? Then the federal deficit will be lowered or just maybe Washington DC will work very hard on finding something to spend the savings times 10 on! I'm sure they can figure it out without any coaching from the taxpayers. That was so easy. Problem solved and happiness abounds in Mudville!!!

Wait, one small issue to deal with. Organized labor maybe not being so thrilled with the $$$ cuts and how about the postal employees?????

Back to the real world!

I would miss Saturday delivery. I either receive or mail a package every Saturday. When I was a kid the mail was hand delivered to your door twice a day by the bicycle mailman.
