BREAKING NEWS:

Just saw this on the news.

-------

Investigators seek leads in camper slayings
2003-07-16
The Associated Press

POTEAU -- Investigators sought out "people of interest" to question Wednesday in the slayings of a Texas couple at a campground but had no suspects, an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman said.
The bodies of a husband and wife from Hurst, Texas, were found by a hiker Friday afternoon at the Winding Stair campground in the Ouachita National Forest, said OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown.

Their names had not been released pending positive identification.

Investigators identified people who might be able to provide new leads but would not call them suspects, Brown said.

"We're following leads left and right, hot and heavy," she said.

The victims registered at the campground three days before their bodies were found, Brown said. A tent and vehicle also were found at the site.

Local law enforcement and the U.S. Forest Service stepped up patrols, primarily along the Talimena Scenic Byway, said Kelly Russell, district ranger.

The Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area includes 26,445 acres along the Talimena Drive, part of the overall 1.5 million acres of the Ouachita National Forest in southeastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas.

The Winding Stair campground is heavily forested and used primarily for tent camping, Russell said.

This should be of interest to those who say they don't need a gun for self defense while camping.

You don't often hear of something like this happening in a campground, but things do happen. I don't know if the campers were in a remote area or not, but sometimes you have to use descretion where ever you camp or even park overnight. I'll park overnight in a Wal-mart Super-center, because since they're open 24 hours someone is bound to be close at hand which seems to deter someone from bothering you. Parking in a dark secluded parking lot is just asking for trouble, I think. In this day and age you just can't be too cautious.

With the Lord and a good road map you will never be lost!

They just released information that they were from Hurst, TX. a suburb between Dallas and Ft. Worth. He was in his late 40s, she was 51 I think they said.

They were shot several times with a small caliber gun according to this evenings news.

This is exactly why I carry Mr. Glock....exactly why!!! There are folks out there who have absolutely no regard for human life.

We have boondocked in remote areas where my wife will take the puppies out at night, wearing a shoulder holster and with all the exterior security lights on. And, I'll be watching from inside the motorhome, with my gun handy. Now I know why.

Take a gun for camping???? That is one of the stupidist responses I have heard in a while. Open up your local paper and I am sure you will see other people are murdered every day. Maybe they should all get guns too.

I wonder who the tent and vehicle belonged to. I hear a lot of these crimes are committed by someone known to the victim. Please keep us informed. Karen

If I did carry a gun, what would be the percentages of it being in the right place when I needed it?
If I had to carry a gun just to go out at night or any other time, I wouldn't be in that location in the first place.

No, what's stupid is continuing to believe that society is going to take care of serious crime on its own. Ain't going to happen sister.
