Being new to pop-up camping I was wandering the advantages/disadvantages of awning set-ups. I see some campers have the awning straight out with the poles going to the ground with lead ropes or heavy bases and others attach to the side of the trailer. I have yet to set up our awning and it has the attaching points mounted on the trailer as well as the poles. Just wanting some imput..Thanks

IDAHO,
I HAVE AN AWNING LIKE YOU DESCRIBED WITH THE LEGS ATTACHING TO THE CAMPER AND THE GROUND. I LIKE IT ABOVE THE OLDER POLE TYPE ONLY, DUE TO RIGIDITY AND EASE OF SET-UP. HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD CAMPING SEASON.

My Awning did not have any poles running between camper and the outer end of the awning. Found some inexpensive rods (3) that were expandable and created some tie hooks to keep them in place. Now my awning is nice and tight between the camper and outer end. Two rods on the outer end support the awning on the ground, with a tie rope on each corner.

After messing with the "bag awning" that came with our camper I decided to go with a "canister" type awning, just like the "big boys" have! One person can have it completely "set-up" in less than a minute! (and no "poles" or "ropes" to fool with!)

stanlit - Yet another "temptation" for ya! LOL
As I have "posted" before, the "bag awning" was such a hassle to erect that we just quit using it for anything shorter than a WEEK long camping trip. One time we were doing a "quickie" trip (Friday & Saturday night) and didn't put it out. Saturday morning I looked out the window at my wife cooking breakfast, the sun was beating down on her & she was literally burning up!!! I swore right then and there THAT would NEVER happen again, I ordered the 2500 as soon as we got back home that Sunday night!!!!! Camping is suppose to be FUN & the "bag awning" AIN'T!!!!!!!!

I have the carefree of Colorado Supersport awning on our camper. I had the bag awning removed and swapped it out from the carefree awning when I bought the camper. It cost me $75 more but well worth it. Especially when you have a 5 yr old zoomin around on a dirt boke. I could just see the little boogerhead getting closelined in a guy line or "t-boning" a support post. That was our reasoning.

It seems that awhile back, I read about a setup that would allow for the poles to be attached to the side of the PU. I believe that you had to get some longer poles to do it though. I recall that there was some pvc pipe and eyebolts used to do it. However, even with that you would have to make sure that the awning was opened before cranking up the PU all the way. I'm sure that it would be a lot chaeper, but I really like the awning being in a cannister/tube.

I purchased the carefree bag awning. Not like any other bag awning, set up is a breeze. There are no loose poles to lose or break, everything is attached. I can set it up by my self in about 5 minutes. with wife it takes about 3 minutes, step stoop is handy (for shorter people). Cut and paste to see awning http://www.carefreeofcolorado.com/RVhomepage.html
I would never buy anyother type of awning for a pop-up easy to use and affordable. Wish you luck in getting the best awning for your money, again this is not like any other bag type awning, you just roll it out and hook it to the side of your trailer. Assembly takes about 1 hour first time only.
Keep on Camping!!!
