I have always heard that anytime you had a bad odor to check your vent pipes but thought that that nothing could stop up a pipe that size. Well this last two weeks at the trailer at the lake we have been having a bad black tank odor and had tried all the blue stuff and such. I thought well I have this 360% vent top I have had for a while so I will put it on. When I took the old style plain cap off there almost completely stopping the pipe was a dirt dobber's nest. I cleaner it and run water down vent and install the 360. No more odor. I will never laugh off the " Check your vent pipe " answer again.. Thanks John M.

Hi John,
I wasn't having the odor problem. I decided to check both my vents, Glad I did. The Black had a small paper wasp nest in it (Not active) and the grey was almost plugged with a mud daubers nest. I cleaned both and screened the vents. Good tip for RV owners, Check those vents.

You're talking on top, right? I was just up there last week scrubbing the rubber roof and I noticed all our vents - must be three up there -had funny looking caps on them wider than the "pipe" and each side (it appeared three sided, if I am remembering correctly) was curved upward which I assumed was to allow ventilation. I didn't see any sign of wasp nests.

Generally you won't see any signs, until you remove the cover and look down into the pipe. Mud Daubers?? Here are very bad and they will plug up just about anything they can. My poor drill press motor needs to have a zipper installed because I have to take it apart on a regular basis. One day, I may actually make a screened box around the motor.
