We are planning on going to S.D. over Christmas and will be returning up the coast (lord, but I dislike the 5). I'm wondering if there are any rv parks closer to there than Morro Bay that can accommodate a 35' TT and Excursion...
Also,is there RV parking available at San Simeon?
We're also thinking about heading up #1 from there, done it before but the other direction,or up 101..So the next question is,what is #46 from Cambria to Atascadero like..

San Simeon SP will hold your rig but there are no hookups. Plenty of parking at Hearst Castle for big rigs, busses, etc.

46 from the coast is good road, two lane with a good climb from the coast and a few smaller hills to Atescadero.

I'd think twice before towing a 35' trailer up 1, especially in Dec. The weather can be iffy.

Have fun. One of the prettiest areas in the world.

I suggest San Simeon State Park if you an make do for a couple of nights without hookups. It has two campgrounds. I don't recall their names but one is at the base of a hill and the other is at the top. We always stay at the top because the sites are larger and some have views. The lower one has showers with hot water. Folks from the other one are not supposed to use it.

I always stay up top also, but recent cuts say that area (Washburn) is open weekends and holidays only.

46 will be no trouble.
Can't you take the 101 rather than the 5?

I'm planning on 101 and/or 1.I haven't been on that stretch of 101 before,so I don't know what's up there and we're going to drop down to Monterey and Carmel at Salinas, unless there's a good place to do it before there.I've done 1 along Big Sur three times from the north, twice by car and once pulling the 27X trailer, but only once from the south and that was just the sightseeing run from Big Sur Cabins and RV park to Ragged Point and back by car and then we pulled the trailer down to S.D.

46 from Hwy 1 just south of Cambria takes you to Paso Robles not Atascadero. Hwy 41 from Morro Bay goes into Atascadero. 46 is a very wide 2 lane road with a few steep grades. View from the top is great. 101 north of Paso is 4 lanes and an easy pull with no steep grades to the Monterey area.
