We atayed in the KOA in Cortez 2 years ago and it was okay. Actually, Cortez makes a nice base to see the entier Area. The rive from cortez-telluride-ouray-Durango-Mesa Verde-Cortez is a nice day trip. But I've stayed in Ouray before and accessed the same area, and Durango has a Rodeo in the Summer. Great Jeep trails in the area between Telluride and Ouray.

Cortez is 115 miles from each of Mon Valley and Moab; would not be a day trip if you planned to enjoy some time there and not give it a "Chevy Chase".
It's the Ute Mountain Casino in Towaoc, a few miles south of Cortez. I wasn't impressed with either the casino or the RV park, but I would go back to both You can check reviews at www.rvparkreviews.com. I had no problem doing a comfortable one day trip to Monument Valley and return. I couldn't begin to do that with Moab - much too much to do and see there.

So much of MV or Arches is best seen in the early morning or later in the day for the shadows and colors. Like I said, if you just want to "see it" (all washed out of color in midday) you could do it but you miss a great deal. I looked on rv park reviews but looked under Cortez.

Krause wrote: We often default to a KOA because they are convenient but in general we don't like them. It is not camping as far as we are concerned. Any suggestions? If you like to camp, then by all means stay in the park. As mentioned, there are some sites with FHU. The rest of the CG is huge. It never fills. You're up on the mesa where it's cooler than down in the valley. Plus, you're closer to what you came to see in the first place. The showers are a nice addition for those of us used to boondocking.

If you are going to see Mesa Verde, you should really stay at Mesa verde RV Park. Right next door to the entrance.
There are other attractions to see as well while in the area. I suggest you visit the Anazasi Museumn in Delores just a few mile north of Cortez.
And, of course, you can take the Western side of Skyline drive to Teluride and on to Ridgeway and to Montrose.
You also will be close to Canyons of the Ancients Nat Mon, with several sites to choose from.
Them move to Durango as one suggested and do the other side. This will give you the full expereince without killing your gasoline budget with needless "back and forth" mileage.
The Mountain Ute RV Park is on Hwy 160 South of Cortez about 10-12 outside of town. It's an Indian Gambling Den. I've driven by it a
number of times and it looks OK if you like parking lot's but it sure won't help your gasoline budget!
Have fun,

Another vote for the CG up in the park itself. Getting along without power or water hookup or cell service is no biggie at all for a few days. Nice roomy campsites. Quiet. deer walking by every evening. No commuting into the park. What could be better?

We aren't KOA fans, but we stayed at the one in Cortez and it was fine. Nice dog walk area and our site was level. If you get a chance, visit Hovenweep National Monument. It has a nice self guided walking trail with some great ruins that you can get close to.

Nice campsite in Durango about 50 mile from Mesa Verde. You can do the Durango/Silverton train from here too!

It's in Towaoc, not Cortez. Here's the LINK. We went by there a couple of years ago, but didn't stay here. Went to the casino, and the smoke was so thick you couldn't see. We walked out and left and went on to Mancos. When we were there, the resort/casino/campground was out in the middle of nowhere, with nothing but the casino nearby.
