We are planning on visiting Mesa Verde NP in July 2010- any recommendations for decent camping? We often default to a KOA because they are convenient but in general we don't like them. It is not camping as far as we are concerned. Any suggestions?

The national park has a campground of its own, and I believe even has some sites with electric hookups (possibly also water). There are also many private CGs in the region to choose from - not just close to the park, but also in the Durango area, which is about an hour or so from the park. Durango is a great place to stay, with the narrow-gauge RR (beautiful scenic ride - plan all day for this), river rafting and all sorts of other things to do, as well as visiting Mesa Verde.

For information on the park's campground, go to nps.gov and follow the links to Mesa Verde. Also check rvparkreviews for both Mesa Verde and Durango.

Hi Krause,

There are at least two campgrounds very near the East entrance to the park. They both feature electric, water and sewer sites. One has a swimming pool and hot tub. I'm not sure about the other.

KOA in Cortez is, by far, the best in the area.

Senior Passes will get you in the park and the discount will apply to the dry campsites only. If you like "camping" stay in the park. They have a service center with hot showers (bring quarters). On our first trip there we stayed in the park in our mini van with our Coleman appliances. Had deer walking thought our campsite every day.

We stayed at the A&A campground, about half way between Mancos and Cortez and right at the enterence to the park, when we were at Mesa Verde and found it to be OK. They have full hook-up's, rates are reasonable and the owners were very friendly. The campground is not a resort by any means, but they do have a pool and the grounds are well maintained.

I stayed at Mesa Verde RV Resort 1/2 mile from the entrance to MV for a month. It was OK, but certainly not a resort. I agree with the poster who recommended staying in/near Durango as there is MUCH to do if you base from there. You can do MV in a couple of days (or less if necessary), then drive, using your base in Durango, the Million Dollar Highway (in your TOAD only) to Ouray, take the train the same trip, drive to Monument Valley (a fairly long trip), etc., just so many more things to do in the Durango area than in the Cortez area.

Check out the Mountain Ute RV Park in Cortez. They have a nice RV park with full hook ups. When you check in they tell you the weekly rate is $170 BUT they also tell you to go to the Casino and get a user card and then the rate drops to $75 per week. It's not that far from Mesa Verde, Monument Valley or Arches National Park. We stayed there is April in a MN and really enjoyed it. Happy Trails Bob W.

Been to Cortez a few times and never heard of Mountain Ute - or even on this or other Forums. Can't find in in RCPR, TL or Woodalls. Are you sure it is in Cortez?

Cortez is 115 miles from each of Mon Valley and Moab; would not be a day trip if you planned to enjoy some time there and not give it a "Chevy Chase".
