The DOT date stamp on the cylinder is for hydrostatic testing for all pressurized cylinders. From Oxygen to Nitrogen, etc. It is not DOT thing it is a safety thing. For integrety of the cylinder itself. Keep the cylinders till the are almost needing reinspected then exchange. I you watch the local guy that fills them will look for the date when he is hooking it up. If it is out of date then his own life could be at stake if the tank explodes.

I did in fact pay $11.00 to have a 30# tank refilled. It was 2 weeks ago and I looked for the receipt and couldn't find it. If you don't believe me call the business: Lictus Keystone INC./Propane 716 355-6363, located in Clymer, NY. I will make sure to save my receipt for my next tank, that is getting low, and scan it in for you non believers!

In my area the exchange tanks are twice the cost of a refill, along with the fact that they are short by 1-2 gallons. There was an article in the papers about an investigation some time back.

We use propane at home. Earlier this year we paid a fee to 'lock in' our propane price for the year at $1.60/gallon. As I have a wet leg on my 1,000 gallon propane tank, I can refill an empty 30# bottle to 80% (24# or 5.7 gallons) for a little over $9.

It's a little work, but worth it to me.

Click on my profile to see the scanned receipt.

A picture of the receipt for refilling a 30# tank today for $16.63 including NYS tax. The price went up from the last time I refilled for $11.00.
