I did exchange some old 20# tanks for pre-filled to get the new valve. In some cases, the pre-filled were within $1 of a fill-up. One place I took a coupon for a springtime special fill-up of my own tank, only put about 17# in it when I got it home and weighed it. It felt light compared to the other one which weighed correct.

I watched his scale trip and have worked at a place doing this myself. There is no way that such an error can be made without gross incompetence or intentional cheating. And the couponed price came out higher than a competitor at normal price. Dumbest marketing I've ever seen.

Regarding propane tanks on travel trailers...is there any reason why you couldn't do a cylinder exchange at Walmart or grocery stores, vs. refilling the tanks that came with the trailer? Just looking at cost effectiveness, it would most times be cheaper to exchange the cylinder instead of refilling them from empty. But is there any reason you wouldn't want to do this?

Not sure about the tank exchanges at Walmart, etc., but you tanks on your trailer are DOT certified and good for like 10 years so do you want to exchange a 1 year old cylinder for one that is 9 years old and find out if stopped you have either a LP cylinder that is not legal or take the chance it doesn't meet DOT safety requirements. These BBQ exchange tanks might be legal for a lot longer than the DOT certified tanks than are O.K. for TTs. I'll stick with refilling my cylinders at a regular propane refilling station.

I just filled one of my 30# tanks for only $11.00. I think I will stay with refilling.

Where did you get it filled? Gas station? Campground? Propane gas facility?

Exchange costs more and the tank is not full
And once you get an exchange bottle it may not be fillable by others leaving you stuck.
I find propane dealers are best and other places hit or miss.

That's about what I've been paying at U-Haul. I was surprised that U-Haul refills them and their prices are among the lowest I've found so far.

I would agree tt tanks are DOT approved for a reason.I believe the walls of the cylinders are thicker gauge steel. in case road debri hits them.I always refill no matter what the cost.(just cheap insuance)It would be less aggreivating than dealing with insuranse companys about damages and them finding out no dot approved tanks.gives them the upper hand to refuse paying for loss.

I've been hearing about meth manufacturers using the refillable tanks for making meth. Then they trade them in for another, the stuff used to make this junk is very corrosive so if the company doing the refilling don't check for this you can get a very dangerous tank.
