The family and I are planning a trip to New York starting the day after christmas driving from here in Alabama. We will spend a few days in NYC and then down to baltimore to visit relatives. I will be watching the weather in case it looks like there will be any hard freezes forcasted. Is there anything else that we should be aware of? I am aware that the campground we will be out will not provide water during this time.
We are new 5th wheel owners and am still learning about it. We have 2 trips under our belt with 3 more planned before the NY trip.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Watch for low bridges, ice, hail and maybe sleet. Then again it could be a balmy 40F. Not sure if you will need chains. IMO I would make it the 4th of July time to visit relatives. "Everyone complains about the weather and nobody does anything about it" Lots of luck

I am in the Philly area and the weather is almost identical to NYC. You will almost certainly experience hard freeze by Christmas. We have a freeze warning for this coming weekend.

Wow, NYC in December Brrrr. Is your Jayco a four season unit? Better be. One thing is for sure, you'll need plenty of propane to keep warm. I'd avoid carrying anything in your 5vr that can freeze while in transit. We configured ours for four season camping but we're only certified to zero degrees while camping, not while in motion. Don't know if you can run your heater while traveling to keep things from freezing. Happy Camping and please let us know how it worked out for y'all

It's not, but i am doing lots of research on getting it there. We will only be in NY for 2 days. Worst case scenerio, we rent a hotel. Ive been looking over the weather history for the last few Christmas weeks, and they have been fairly mild, so maybe I will get lucky as well.
We have stayed in tents below freezing, our only concern is for the pipes, etc.
Thank you all for your comments!

I live in New Jersey although I was born & raised in Georgia. Be aware that you will pay a fortune in tolls in the area between NYC & Baltimore. The stretch of I95 in Maryland & Delaware costs $23 in Maryland & $7 in Delaware. You will pay $16 to go over the Delaware Memorial Bridge going southbound. There is no northbound toll. In Baltimore, you are not allowed through the tunnels with a RV. You will need to go over Francis Scott Key Bridge at $6. When you get to NJ, avoid the NJ Turnpike as long as you can. You can drive up I295 to I195 to the turnpike & there is a Flying J right after you get into NJ at Exit 2C. There is a Camping Wold at Exit 10. You cannnot go through any of the NYC tunnels with a RV. You won't need snow chains, you will need a lot of patience. Don't bring your gun, you just might kill a NJ driver! You will probably go up I81 to the NYC area, you'll run into these toll roads etc. going from NYC to Baltimore. Buy a snow brush/ice scraper for the windshield.

Lots of propane, no liquids.
Over night lows will certainly be below freezing, low enough to fracture any p-trap with water.
Even if you heat the Rig, there is a very high probability that the waste tank drains will freeze as will the fresh water pump motor.
Winterize the unit, no water, no liquids.
And yes, one overnight is all it takes.

Too funny! But it is the truth. I live in Upstate NY but spent my first 35 years in NYC. I would not bring my 5er to NYC. Stay in a hotel!

I agree with this statement. Especially if planning to tow thru downtown NYC. But out thru Long Island would be OK.
You might also consider installing a CB radio. So you can talk 18 wheelers into letting you in to change lanes as you get close to the city. And also get a GPS that will warn you ahead of time as to which lane you need to be in before a turn comes up. Mine is a Garmin.
