Yes, no thermocouple, if the burner lights, the spark should stop at once, if not check connection on board, also some times the connection on the electrode comes loose. It would pull out easy, strip wire about 3/4", twist fold over and push in tight. Quick fix.

If you start replacing components and get to replacing the control board, I highly recommend going with a board made by Dinosaur Electronics.
Dinosaur boards come highly recommended by folks on this forum. I have one in my water heater and it works better now than it ever has.

OK, before we get into the high dollar stuff, lets go back and look at the free stuff! Most of the water heaters I have worked on in the past ESPECIALLY when you say spider webs, The fuel lines are blocked more than likely. Remove the Gas Line from the water heater, this includes removing the igniter and I believe the thermocouple. This should all come out as 1 unit. Then remove the tiny brass tip out of the gas line and clean it out with some type of Solvent. DO NOT STICK ANYTHING THRU THE HOLE! Use Paint Thinner, Gasoline, anything like that, let it sit for a minute and blow out with compressed air, you should be able to look thru and see daylight. Reassemble and try again. Hope this makes sense and helps.

I betcha CPO nailed it! Also, it never hurts to wipe the board contacts with alcohol any time a weird problem surfaces.

Problem fixed! and thank you to everyone that said to go the cheap route first. I took the ignitor and sparker out and cleaned them really good and also made sure the sparker was very close to the ignitor and it works perfectly. I think over time the sparker wiggled or vibrated further from the ignitor. Thanks again for all of the tips.
