On that one pressing the switch will start the timer and a woman's voice tells me to be sure the lock arms are released and everthing is out of the way. If I press the switch when the slide is part way out it will stop till I press it again, then I again get the delay and voice message before it goes the other way.

Ours is a one push and it goes out you don't hold the button same for coming in. I've never tried to stop it midway for fear of screwing something up .

I know that We all have those little lapses of Memory but surely None of Us would attempt to extend the slide(s) without first doing a walk around the rig to check clearance distances and unpack those hard to reach compartments under the slide(s). "Really" ,None of Us would do such a thing Would we!

I have a '02 Newmar, you press the slideout switch, hear "the voice" tell you that you have 5 seconds - reminds to unlock arms and inside area is clear. Then, the slide moves. Now, my smaller bedroom slide - no voice/reminder, just push the switch and in/out it goes. I believe the newer style, where the operator must keep hand on the switch, was done for safety.
Here's my tip: I have a piece of twine/rope that is the length of the width of my slideout extension. When I arrive at a campsite, I take my length of twine, and put one end up against the slideout, extend the twine, and walk it down to the far end of the slideout. I also check above my eye level for branches and such. The twine takes up no space and is easy to use, gives me peace of mind once I push that slideout button!!!

Seems like wandering1 has the obvious answer. Push the button and see what happens. That is unless you don't have a slide to try it with. You don't really need a tree in the way to test the process.

You have a lot of answers here, but if you would state the year and make of your Motorhome, and the number of slides, someone with that model will surely reply with the right procedure for you. I won't add how my 2004 Fleetwood Southwind works because it is probably not like yours and will just add to the confusion. But you can't go wrong in your testing if you get the slide out moving and then hit the button again and see if it stops. Better to find out how it works when nothing is in the way then to find out it does not work when there IS something in the way.

ALL RV's built after about 2006 or 2007 MUST have a slide switch that you must hold to continue the slide mechanism. Before that, there were some you had to hold and some that you could push and release and then let it go out or In. The RVIA mandated the continual push switch in 2006 or 2007 as a safety concern.
