Hi,
We have a Pullrite Super Glide hitch and even though it is only 18 months old it has developed a lot of rusty places. I sanded the hitch down and repainted it but the paint job did not hold up well. My research indicates that you will not have much luck painting over a powder coated surface so that probably was my problem because I spent a great deal of time with the pre painting prep.
I have decided that my best plan would be to have the hitch sandblasted and either re-powder coated or painted. I have a client that has an oilfield machine shop and they tell me they have a paint that holds up to a lot of abuse and they will paint the hitch for me after I get it sandblasted. I spoke with a local company that does both sandblasting and powder coating and they tell me if the powder coating is done properly it is much more durable than paint.
What do you think? Paint or powder coating?
I would appreciate any input you could offer.

Powder coating is more durable, but paint is cheaper.I don't see how it would rust unless you bang into it or scratch it loading stuff in the bed.

Powder coating is much better but it can add a lot of thickness to the surface. In other words you may have to ream out the holes so the bolts will go back in if they were a tight fit to begin with, also were pieces go back together may have to be sanded a bit, unless you have it powder coated already together. Hope this makes sense. We also treat the bare metal with a rust inhibitor before we paint or have something powder coated.

Why do have it Rhino Sealed . More durable than powder coat.
Just have the areas that need to be left bare taped off

Powder coating is far more durable than paint. Might be difficult to disassemble to a good level for powder coating.
I dont know if I would consider Rhino or LineX as there are too many moving parts and it seems the parts that rust are the ones that wear from use.

I would go for the paint so you dont go thru this again in 18 more months. When stuff happens paint is alot easier to touch-up than powdercoat.

The internal working parts are subject to rust. Especially if you spend much time in close proximity to salt water. When the flanges of the cam arm assembly rusts, it can cause rough spots. And those rough spots can scratch up the slide rails a bit. Even though Slip Plate is used religiously on the slide rails.
I think it is a good idea (with annual maintenance) to be sure to file off any rust from the top/bottom of the flanges to make the sliding surface smooth and then also apply SlipPlate liberally to the top and bottom of the flanges that slide over the rails.

I believe all powder coatings need to be cured in an oven.
