Whether running on gas or diesel, the only limit to outfitting your tow vehicle is your imagination
Trailer Life, June 2008
Most of us consider a new tow rig a blank canvas -- a starting point from which to create a vehicle designed specifically for our own needs. But unlike some who prefer form over function, RVers tend to gravitate toward the accessories that help them enjoy life on the highway and at the campsite -- and if they look good doing it, so much the better.
All told, there are literally hundreds of products that are perfectly suited for the RV lifestyle.
Towing
For trailer towing, there is a wide array of products to choose from. A variety of hardware is available for different trailer weights, and the new generation of brake controllers are designed to be easy to calibrate and quick to react.
Appearance
A tow vehicle doesn't have to be all-business; there are numerous ways to improve its looks while enhancing functionality. Today's truck caps and tonneau covers look great, many are lockable, and some even have, mounting options that can let you carry toys like kayaks, bikes, skis, etc. And lest you think a fifth-wheel hitch precludes you from owning such product, there are even retractable truck bed covers that roll back when you need to hitch up. Also, adding an electric step will help get you in the cab and on the road to adventure.
Performance
With today's performance products, you can gain power without sacrificing reliability. Items such as air intakes and exhaust systems cannot only improve power, they can help fuel economy as well. And diesel engines can benefit from unprecedented performance choices, including turbochargers, intercoolers, exhaust manifolds and more. Diesel owners can also take advantage of an exhaust brake, which slows the tow rig on downhill stretches.
Miscellany
When outfitting your tow vehicle, think about how you plan to use it. Do you like to carry a lot of extra tools and equipment? An in-bed toolbox might be a useful addition.
Whether running on gas or diesel, the only limit to building the ultimate tow vehicle is your imagination.
