The 2016 Discovery Sport is a fresh new model in Land Rover’s lineup. Replacing the LR2, it shares about 50 percent of its parts with the Range Rover Evoque and is sized similarly to BMW’s X3, Jeep’s Cherokee and GMC’s Terrain. With third-row seating, there’s space for five adults and two children.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged 240-horsepower four-cylinder engine feeds power into a nine-speed automatic transmission. The standard Haldex all-wheel-drive system varies torque delivery to the wheels via the center differential and individual brake actuation with as much as 100 percent to one axle.

2016-Land-Rover-Discovery-interiorMaximum tow rating is 5,500 pounds, and the Sport features Tow Hitch Assist, Tow Assist, and Trailer Stability Assist. A new rear suspension layout increases wheel travel and provides a better ride. For off-road prowess the Sport’s Terrain Response system has several modes including normal, dynamic sand and snow and gravel. Land Rover’s Autonomous Emergency Braking system employs cameras to detect and avoid hazards and the Sport also will offer lane-departure warnings, parking assist, and auto headlamps. Some body panels are aluminum.

Disco-sport-interiorLand Rover’s new Discovery Sport comes in three trim levels: SE, HSE, and HSE Lux. Base SE pricing begins at $37,995, and climb into the upper $40ks for a loaded HSE Lux, which has leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and other power. Other options include GPS, panoramic roof, alloy rims, skid plates, side steps, and a tow package.
