Capturing the fun of your RVing adventures and sharing them with loved ones has become an outdoor sport unto itself. As technology continues to advance, there’s a new generation of gadgets that will outperform any iPhone or low-end digital camera. With today’s weatherproof camcorders, GPS-equipped cameras, wearable video cams and the return of instant-printing
Polaroids, you can take your outdoor fun, animal-watching and video-shooting skills to the next level wherever you roam.
We’ve assembled a few examples of compelling new outdoor image-capture devices and accessories to help explore the world, record your memories, keep them organized and share them all with friends and family back home.
Polaroid is back in the business of building instant film cameras. The brand-new Polaroid Z2300 has a 10 megapixel lens, high-def video recording capability, a 3-inch LCD screen, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and prints 2-by-3-inch full-color prints that are smudge-proof and water-resistant — without any ink cartridges or ribbons to replace. You can view and crop images on the camera before printing, and can even add borders (including the classic “Polaroid border”) and print in black and white.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4
When you can bundle the latest features and gadgets into one device, it’s a home run. In terms of features, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4 knocks it out of the park. The Lumix is waterproof for up to 40 feet underwater, drop-proof for up to 6.6 feet, all contained within a hard, light aluminum body with a 2.7-inch screen. The camera shoots 12.1 megapixels and includes a 360-degree panoramic option. It not not only takes stills, the Lumix also shoots about 100 minutes of video. It’s equipped with a GPS that records your travel path — handy for remembering where your photos were taken, especially when you’ve been on an extended trip covering multiple places.
GoPro HD Hero2
GoPro’s HD Hero2 is a high-quality, wearable video and photo camera that fits into the palm of your hand. With a range of accessories including a detachable LCD screen ($79.99), Wi-Fi and remote control combo ($99.99), an additional battery ($49.99), a 3-D add-on ($99.99) and many unique mounting kits, you can have a do-it-all camera that records whatever you’re doing with shockingly high-quality and all-conditions durability. The Outdoor Edition includes a vented helmet strap, head strap, curved and flat adhesive mounts and a three-way pivot arm.
Sony Handycam HDR-GW77V/W
Waterproof, shockproof and dustproof, Sony’s Handycam HDR-GW77V/W captures high-definition video and photos without the worry of damage from the elements. Its lens takes 60p HD video and 20.4 megapixel photos, while the shell is designed to withstand depths up to 16 feet and falls up to 5 feet, while shrugging off dirt, dust, snow and rain. The viewfinder is a clear 3-inch touchscreen LCD. Other features include GPS geotagging with NAVTEQ maps, 17x zoom, “active mode” image stabilization and four hours of recording with 16 gigs of flash memory.
Designed for point-and-shoot cameras or pocket video cameras, the GorillaPod by Joby weighs about 1.6 ounces for easy transport and has three flexible legs bonded with more than two dozen leg joints. The Gorilla Pod is marketed to set up just about anywhere with legs that bend and rotate 360 degrees, wrapping around tree limbs or poles. Extra stability on flat or unstable terrain is supported by the rubberized foot grips. With a quick-release clip, cameras and iPhones stay securely in place when in use or devices can be removed quickly and easily for the next step. The GorillaPod is available in 10 colors. Accessories for iPhone attachments can be purchased separately.
