For 2011, BMW has done a mild facelift on the X5, but bigger news is the addition of BMW’s
twin-scroll, single-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six in the new xDrive35i and a potent twin-turbo
4.4-liter V-8 in the new xDrive50i. Both engines come with BMW’s new eight-speed automatic
transmission. The xDrive35i is rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, while the xDrive50i
puts out 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel-economy figures haven’t been announced, but we expect the greater efficiency of the
eight-speed will offset power increases. Of particular interest to trailerists is the
torquey turbodiesel X5 xDrive35d. Its 265-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel puts out 425 lb-ft of
torque while delivering EPA mileage of 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway. This advanced diesel is
emissions-legal in all 50 states. The twin-turbocharged 555-hp X5 M won’t receive
significant changes for 2011.

Options include active cruise control, lane-departure warning system, active steering,
head-up display and side-view and top-view cameras. The X5 xDrive35i Premium brings USB and
iPod integration, leather seats and access to several options such as the convenience
package, active ventilated seats, cold-weather package, technology package and third-row
jump seats. At the top of the xDrive35i range sits the $54,975 X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity,
which features 20-inch wheels and sport seats. Pricing for the X5 xDrive35d diesel is
$52,175, while the X5 xDrive50i is $59,275. Tow ratings haven’t been announced yet, but are
expected to equal last year’s specs, with maximums up to 6,000 pounds.
