Providing seating for up to eight people, the LX 470 (introduced in March 1998) gained
several handling advancements for 2000. Its vehicle skid control (VSC) system helps
maintain stability by detecting and countering understeer and oversteer conditions, and the
new traction control system provides a limited-slip differential effect by electronically
controlling rear-wheel traction with brake intervention. Brake assist can detect emergency
braking and supplement the braking force applied by the driver. The LX 470 is equipped with
an adaptive variable suspension system (AVS) that allows the driver to vary the shock
damping rate from “comfort” to “sport” modes to achieve the desired ride quality. The
adjustable height control (AHC) feature gives the driver the ability to lower the height of
the vehicle for easier entry and exit as well as raise the vehicle for improved
driveability over rough terrain. Lexus provides a 48-month/50,000-mile warranty as basic
coverage; the powertrain is protected for 72 months or 70,000 miles as are the restraint
systems and body against corrosion perforation (corrosion protection has no mileage
limits). While the LX470 is bit pricey at $60,105, the only factory options available are
an audio system upgrade and wood trim for the steering wheel and shift lever. For those who
enjoy using their tow vehicles for mobile offices, the LX 470 contains three accessory
power outlets, offering the versatility for plugging in items such as a cell phone, laptop
computer, travel refrigerator or a 12-volt DC vacuum cleaner. According to Lexus, the LX
470′s 4.7-liter DOHC V-8 produces 80 percent of its peak torque (256 lb-ft) at a very low
1,100 rpm, and the engine meets the EPA’s low emissions vehicle (LEV) certification. Peak
torque is 320 lb-ft @ 3,400 rpm and maximum horsepower is 230 hp @ 4,800 rpm.
