Ford’s Expedition is one of the few full-size SUVs available which are suitable to carry a large family and tow a heavy trailer. Expedition’s standard 5.4L V8 delivers enough power to tow up to 9,200 pounds when properly equipped. When the road goes from dry to snowy, icy or gravel covered, the available Control Trac four-wheel-drive system provides more sure-footed traction. The independent rear suspension helps ensure your trips are comfortable, on smooth and rough roads alike.

The 5.4L V8 is engineered to put the torque where it’s needed most, delivering 85 percent of peak torque at just 1,500 rpm. That’s important for pulling a big load from a dead stop. Multivalve (three valves per cylinder) technology allows the engine to breathe freely, increasing horsepower. The 5.4L engine generates 310 horsepower and 365 lb.-ft. of torque. All that power is transmitted to the drive wheels by way of a six-speed automatic transmission. Its wide ratio spread helps the engine generate lots of low-end torque (for tasks such as towing) and provide efficient operation in overdrive on the highway. This engine is also flex-fuel capable, so you can run on E85 fuel, gasoline, or any mix of the two.

The onboard computer comes standard with AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control) to make towing easier.

If you need to tow a large trailer, Expedition has the capability you can call on. The Expedition 4×2 regular-length model has a maximum 9,200-pound towing capacity when properly equipped with the available Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. (The Expedition EL has a maximum towing capacity of 8,900 lbs.) Expedition features standard Trailer Sway Control. It works in conjunction with AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control) to determine from the yaw motion of the vehicle if the trailer is swaying and takes measures, such as applying precise braking or reduced engine torque, to help bring both vehicle and trailer under control. There are eight trim levels; starting MSRP is $37,600 and EPA city/hwy fuel mileage is rated 14/20 mpg.

    It would be a great help if these articles included GVWR, GCWR, and vehicle weight with full liquids and no people, or other interior load.

    Dodge rates my Dakota to two 6700 lbs. The GCWR is 10,500 lbs. The Dakota as described above weighs 4580 lbs. The difference is only 5920 lbs which leaves only 5920 lbs for the trailer and all of the load in the Dakota itself. Remover the driver’s 220 lbs and my luggage ant the Dakota can tow only 1000 pounds less than it is rated to tow.

    There is one vehicle which I have found in which the GCWR is found by adding the GVWR and the TOW rating. It is the Toyota FJ Cruiser.

    My personal opinion is that all light duty vehicles should have their tow ratings set in this manner. It should greatly reduce accidental overloading.

    I have a 2010 Ford Expedition EL and it tows our 2011 Rockwood 8314BSS at 8200 lbs with ease. Does a great job with an awesome ride. It has the factory installed Class IV/III towing package, well worth the money. The only thing it lacks is towing mirrors that Ford does not offer.

    Hi Gene — I’m thinking about buying a 33 foot camper and was wondering if the Expedition is a good match. The TT is listed at 5000 lbs dry and about 7500 lbs gross. I’ve read post on other websites which say the Expedtion is not a good option. I’m new to towing so I’m still trying to figure all of this out.

    Michael, I have a 2011 Expedition and a 2012 Dutchmen Kodiak that is 32 ft. long and weights 5998 dry and 7800 lbs. gross. So far, I have had no problems at all towing and just returned from a trip with some pretty steep grades and winding roads. The trailer sway control comes standard and gives a lot of confidence when passing big rigs or in windy conditions and tow haul gearing is absolutely great as it gives a lot more power for climbs and engine braking for steep descents. I could not be happier and would highly recommend the Expedition as a great tow and family vehicle.

    Michael,
    I have had no problems towing my 8200 lb 34 foot TT with my 2010 Expedition EL with class III/IV towing package. I get 20-21 mpg on the highway without the tow and 10-12 mpg with the TT. When towing I usually limit my speed to 60 mph. The only short fall is the lack of towing mirrows. I am looking for a rear camera to put on the trailer to help this shortfall. I would recommend the Expedition EL for towning. Make sure you get a good equalizer hitch. The Ford installed trailer sway with stability control works great.
