GMC’s Sierra 1500 pickup is well suited to folks who want to tow a mid-sized trailer with comfort and style. Standard interior features include heated and cooled driver and front passenger 12-way power-adjustable bucket seats, leather-appointed seating, brushed metal and wood-grain accents throughout the cabin, and a standard heated leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls. Distinctive exterior highlights include 20” chromed aluminum wheels and there’s a power sliding rear window available on the Sierra 1500 Denali.

Sierra offers the widest range of full-size pickup V8 gas engines, with 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L Hybrid and 6.2L, with outputs from 302 to 403 HP. The Sierra Denali comes standard with a 6.2L V8 engine which delivers 403 HP, and is also FlexFuel capable. All models come with an automatic transmission, and both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available.

Additional amenities make it easier to drive. The standard rear vision camera, shown on the rearview mirror or navigation screen, makes it easier to back up to a trailer or negotiate a tight space. An available 7” in-dash navigation system with 2-D or 3-D map graphics helps you find the way. Bluetooth allows cellphone connectivity to the audio system, for hands-free calling. An MP3-compatible six-disc CD player feeds music to the standard Bose Centerpoint surround-sound system. It delivers five independent channels from existing two-channel recordings and gives you the sensation of a live performance.

Driver Shift Control: Move through the gears like a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic. Hill Start Assist senses potential “roll back” situations and holds full brake pressure when you lift your foot from the pedal. It gives you up to 1.5 extra seconds to apply power and drive off.

With the standard heavy duty trailering package, Sierra offers up to 10,700 pounds of trailering capacity, while Sierra Denali offers up to 9,600 pounds. Standard equipment includes a trailering hitch platform and 2″ receiver, 7-wire harness mated to a 7-way sealed connector, a wiring harness for an aftermarket trailer brake controller and an external transmission oil cooler.

The available integrated trailer brake controller is located close to the steering wheel for easy adjustments, and displays the level of brake force in the Driver Information Center. Standard trailer sway control technology keeps the truck and trailer heading in the proper direction, automatically using sensors to detect the rocking of a swaying trailer, and then applying the brakes to bring it back in line if needed.

Manufacturer’s suggested retail price starts at $22,595.

When I set out to find a tow vehicle for my 5th wheel I was mislead by similarly accurate articles and set my budget way too low! I recently purchased a GMC Sierra which has essentially the same options as the Chevy, so I am speaking from my experience. One glaring error is the entire list of features in the sentence, “Standard interior features include heated and cooled driver and front passenger 12-way power-adjustable bucket seats, leather-appointed seating, brushed metal and wood-grain accents throughout the cabin, and a standard heated leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls.” These require a much more expensive model than the price of $22,595.

A relatively plain model without all the features quoted, but with a diesel for pulling power, has an MSRP closer to $50,000. This isn’t to pick on Chevy. Similar models from Ford or Chrysler are just as costly.
