Staff Pick: Luci Solar String Lights

Solar powered string lights by Luci

A camper adds solar powered string lights by Luci to a campsite — three photos showing the light string reel, single light and string hanging from trees.Luci’s line of solar lights adds sparkle to any campsite. From the original Inflatable Solar Light ($19.95) to the new Solar String Lights ($35, shown above and right), each has an integrated solar panel for charging in direct sunlight. Several models have two-way USB ports that can provide a quick boost on overcast days when plugged into 120-volt AC or charge mobile devices.

The Luci Connect ($64.95) is the company’s most versatile light, with 24 white and 12 RGB LEDs and Bluetooth connectivity. The Connect operates via a mobile app or a switch on its base, and emits a bright lantern beacon or a nearly unlimited range of mood-setting colored lights.

The Solar Light Kit is a hands-on do-it-yourself toy that teaches kids seven and older “about the power and potential of solar energy.”

MPowerd, the company that makes Luci lights, is a B (Benefit) Corporation that creates clean-energy products. As part of its mission, MPowerd supplies Luci lights to aid organizations for use in disaster zones and in countries where power grids are unreliable or nonexistent.

Luci lights are available on the MPowerd website and at Camping World and Gander Outdoors. All are lightweight and most are waterproof up to 1 meter so they not only light up your terrestrial life but make fun nighttime water toys, as well. The Solar String Lights can’t be immersed in water but are rain-resistant.

My favorite Luci product is the Solar String Lights, an 18-foot cord with 20 warm-white LEDs in 10 light modules. Clipped to our travel trailer’s awning or some obliging trees, the light string adds nighttime ambience. The base has a USB port for powering up when the sun’s behind the clouds or charging phones and tablets. When it’s time to decamp, the string coils into the plastic storage base so there’s no tangled mess. Bob Dawson, Trailer Life Production Director
