A little local trivia about Mount Rushmore: In 1885 Charles E. Rushmore, a New York attorney, was in the Black Hills checking titles to properties for an eastern mining company under the guidance of one William Challis. When returning to camp one day, Rushmore pointed to a granite mountain and asked Challis its name. Challis jestingly replied: “Never had one, until now — we’ll call the thing Rushmore.”
Built of stacked wooden 2x4s, this long- forgotten 1888 jail was discovered within a house that was being demolished in 1982.
