Water-Heater Debris

Q. This fall while I was winterizing my trailer, I thought it would be a good idea to flush out the water heater. I ran water though it from the shore hookup, with the water-heater plug out. While doing this I noticed pieces of glass coming out the drain. Does this mean that I have a broken glass liner? And should I replace the water heater?

–L.I., Mayville, Michigan

A. Yes, L.I., you have a broken glass liner, and yes, you should definitely replace the water heater. You sure don’t want to get any glass shards into your freshwater system. Water heaters don’t last forever, and a broken liner is a good sign that it’s time to move on.
