Snowbird Getaways: AlabamaGolf is not generally the first thing that comes to mind when Alabama is mentioned. But snowbirds who need their daily serving of greens will love the Yellowhammer State. Revered golf-course designer Robert Trent Jones has laid out an amazing 21 signature tracks within the state’s borders. Collectively known as the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (which officially includes 27 courses, counting the nine-hole and par-3 layouts), this necklace of emeralds adorns the state from top to bottom, with no course more than 20 minutes off Interstate 65, and with no more than a two-hour drive from one to the next. Each layout serves up its own charms, with Capital Hill’s fairways, for example, skirting the serene waters of the Alabama River, and the verdant greens of Mobile’s Magnolia Grove practically linking up with the snowbird destinations in the southwestern corner of the state.

It’s no wonder that RVers congregate in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, both within an awning’s length of Gulf State Park, and within a wafting salty breeze of both Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. And that much water should tempt any angler. History buffs and nature lovers can zip on out to the needlepoint of Fort Morgan State Park to explore the Fort Morgan Historic Site and to gawk at all that blue. Then a quick ferry ride to the sliver of Dauphin Island permits travelers to head north on SR 193, having arced halfway around Mobile Bay, allowing them to investigate the bustling city itself. Don’t miss the attractions on the east side of town, including the IMAX Dome Theater and the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park.

Snowbirds can swing through Montgomery in January for the Winter-Blooming Azalea and Camellia Show, then partake of the festivities during the annual Snowbird Day at the Riviera Center Factory Stores in Foley, just north of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Call (800)
