Snowbird Getaways: Oklahoma

152101_0209getaways-ok.jpgWith 39 federally recognized American Indian nations within its borders, and with cowboy history and lore affixed to every length of barbed wire, Oklahoma provides the perfect backdrop for snowbirds wishing to experience the Old West.

To witness the hourly gunfight reenactments on Guthrie’s streets or to visit Bartlesville’s Woolaroc Ranch, Museum and Wildlife Preserve, with its 700 animals and its collection of western art and artifacts, is to mosey back to a dustier time. And certainly, Oklahoma City’s National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, with its replications of a Western town and a rodeo arena, does nothing to contradict the state’s John Wayne image.

Yet among the showdowns and the powwows, snowbirds will see so much more. Who knew, for example, that Frank Lloyd Wright’s only skyscraper, the Price Tower, pierces the sky above Bartlesville? Or that the parking meter was invented in Oklahoma? And the newly completed Oklahoma City Museum of Art, with its 55-foot-high, blown-glass sculpture complementing its outstanding collections, is a pleasant downtown surprise.

Since Oklahoma so often combines the natural and the man-made, RVers who appreciate both will enjoy Tulsa’s Philbrook Museum of Art, a Tuscan villa that houses art collections and sumptuous gardens. And while in Tulsa, a visit to the just-completed Oklahoma Aquarium on the banks of the Arkansas River should provide a high-water mark.

Since rivers crisscross the state, and since the Red River defines its southern border, snowbirds with a penchant for paddling or a fondness for fishing can easily get their fill of both. Lake Texoma, let alone the vast Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees or Eufala Lake, serves up eight species of fish. And the adjacent Chicasaw Point Golf Resort provides a view of the lake on 15 of its 18 championship holes. Whether wearing spurs, spikes or fishing hats, guests know that Oklahoma is more than OK.
