A new joint effort by automakers selling vehicles in the United
States may result in better compatibility between cars and SUVs in
crashes. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers announced that its
members will design light trucks that have better rollover protection
through airbags and electronic driving aids by 2010.
Member companies will also redesign their vehicles to match up
better with passenger cars in crashes. The companies are expected to
publish a list of the vehicles they produce that already meet the new
principles, as well as those that don’t.
Members of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers include BMW,
DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai,
Isuzu, Kia, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota and
