GM Fuel-Cell Vehicle Unveiled

General Motors recently unveiled its so-called Autonomy fuel-cell vehicle at the Detroit
Auto Show, which may change how vehicle makers design and build future cars and trucks. It
uses fuel cells that consume hydrogen, and emit water vapor and heat. The new Autonomy
squeezes all the drive elements, including the fuel cell, in a flat chassis between the
four wheels and under the body and seats. This chassis could be fitted with a wide variety
of bodies, from a sedan to vans or pickup truck beds. All driver controls, such as steering
and braking, are operated by electronics rather than mechanical connections. Also, the fuel
cell can be expanded for more power.
