Record Fuel Prices Subject of Probe

A formal investigation by the Federal Trade Commission has been opened and subpoenas to oil
companies are reportedly on the way. Prices have reached a record $2.33 per gallon in the
Chicago area, and Milwaukee also has been particularly hard hit. The Energy Department
reports that gasoline prices increased five cents per gallon nationally, and the $1.68 per
gallon average denotes the fourth consecutive week of record highs.
