General Motors has announced that it plans to manufacture over one million trucks that can
run on either gasoline or a 15 percent gasoline/85 percent ethanol blend by the 2004 model
year. The trucks won’t be sold in California because they don’t meet that state’s
evaporative emission rules. Although the engines actually get about 20 percent lower fuel
economy on ethanol, GM gets substantial mileage credits against its corporate average fuel
economy as an incentive, due to an EPA rule that encourages manufacturers to build
multi-fuel vehicles.
